It's Not Fear... It's Instinct!

We’ve had many divers come through our shop armed with reasons why they’ve been unable to pursue diving in the past: “I’m scared of the reg falling out!” or “What if I run out of air?”. The majority of these “fears” aren’t really based on things that have even happened to them before. And many have had what claim to be traumatic experiences from their childhood (e.g. getting their head dunked under the water from a sibling) that have stuck with them.

The good news? ALL of these mental blocks are easily overcome with a patient instructor. What many perceive as “fear” is actually just instinct. Instinct tells us to hold our breath whenever our head goes underwater. This is apart of our Mammalian Dive Reflex. So, as with many brand new open water students, you might feel apprehensive towards taking that first breath. We’ve found the best way to combat is through boredom. Yup, you read that right, BOREDOM! We take you to the shallows, and work our way through skills in a very relaxed environment. And when you stare at us like, “What’s next?” that’s when we move forward!
