The Divemaster: Leap to Pro...

Say you’ve been diving for quite awhile and have at least a well varied 50 dives or so under your belt. You may be wondering if you want to jump into the pro circuit with a divemaster certification. First and foremost, ask yourself WHY you want to do it. If it’s simply a matter of wanting to have “master” in your name, that’s not really the best reason. Divemasters generally want to use their license as a stepping stone into the professional world of diving, and are usually keen on teaching others about their passion. No dive professional gets into the game for the money; it generally starts with having an affinity to teach others, and having patience is a very key trait to possess.

Know, too, that your skills will be tested unlike any other program. You’re not necessarily learning a whole lot of new skills as you are mastering the open water ones. You may be comfortable taking your mask off underwater, but can you do it without changing your buoyancy at all? How fluid are your motions? As soon as you step into the pool, you are being watched as a tried and true professional, and all of your actions should reflect that.

Did you make the jump to Divemaster? What was your favorite part?
